Curriculum Page

Lakota Local School and the state of Ohio are currently redesigning the science curriculum. Below is a list of topics that have been recommend for the 7th grade science course of study. This may change slightly throughout the year based on the Board's recommendations.

TOPICS:

Metric System
- understanding basic measurements of length, volume, and mass.
- how to use and the metric system in lab applications
- use lab instruments that use metric measurement
- converting metric measurements
Lab Safety
- understand the rules students are expected to follow during lab
- know what to do in a lab emergency
- develop an understanding of my expected lab procedures
- be able to list, understand and use the scientific method during lab throughout the year
Cell Structure
- list, label and describe the function of the different cell parts
- list the differences between a plant and animal cell
- basic cellular function and biochemistry
Cell Reproduction
- sexual and asexual reproduction
- describe the cell stages in mitosis
  - list the different stages
  - describe when mitosis is needed
- describe the cell stages in meiosis
DNA
- structure and function of the DNA molecule
- importance of study
- describe duplication, transcription and translation of DNA
- understand what happens in a mutation and how it may effect the cell
Genetics
- basic Mendelian genetics
- how traits are passed from parent to offspring
- how diversity can increase a species survival
- biotechnology
Evolutionary Theory
- the Darwinian theory of evolution
- investigate the great diversity among organisms
- how variation in organisms increase reproductive or survival success.
- how diversity of species developed over time
- how organism have adapted or become extinct
Characteristics and Structure of Life
- study the basic domains organism are placed (kingdoms)
Diversity and Interdependence of Life
- how organisms interact with one another.
  - predator-prey
  - parasitism
  - mutualism
  - communalism
- how organisms depend on biotic and abiotic resources
- how overpopulation impacts the ecosystem
- energy transfers within Earth's ecosystems
- photosynthesis
- characteristic of different biomes
Weather
- make prediction of weather based on cloud types
- how observations are used to make weather maps
- reading weather maps
- how weather and climate determine different biomes
