Sampling Bacteria

Department of Nutritional Sciences

We will be sampling areas around the school for bacteria, and growing it in specialized containers. Soon you will know which objects around the school have the most MICROBES!!

Tape Duplication Supply We Home Inspect

  1. First we will choose our three locations for sampling.
  2. Next we will collect our supplies, 1 petri dish with growth medium, clean cotton swabs, a permanent marker, and tape.
  3. Drawing on the outside of the container, draw a large + sign that will divide the dish into 4 parts.
  4. Take a cotton swab and lightly rub over the area to be sampled.
  5. Swab the growth medium with the germy cotton swab, careful to stay in the labeled area, and place the lid on the container.
  6. Discard the dirty cotton swab.
  7. Repeat the process for your 3 samples, in the 4th section swab with a clean dry cotton swab as your control.
  8. Tape the dish closed to prevent future contamination.
  9. Carefully label the petri dish with your name and place it in the location your teacher chooses.
  10. In a few days we will check the dishes to see what has grown!
