- There are three types
of botulism
- Food botulism
- Wound botulism
- Infant botulism
Transmission
- Food botulism is caused
by eating foods containing the botulism toxin.
- Wound botulism is caused
by the toxin produced from a wound infected with C. botulinum
- Infant botulism caused
by consuming the spore of botulism bacteria which then grow in the intestines
and release toxins.
Symptoms
- Common symptoms include double or blurred vision, drooping
eyelids, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness.
- If untreated it may lead to paralysis of arms, legs, trunk,
and respiratory muscles.
Mortality
~ 8%
