&G¼Trees of Kramer School—Gail Reynolds, MAT student. Project based on a dichotomous key identifying several trees on the grounds of Kramer Elementary School in Oxford, Ohio. ÿÿ CXAttdataSIMPLEAOne leaf with a bud at the base of its petiole (stem of the leaf)kinds of leaves2s.jpg€COMPOUNDzA compound leaf has one petiole (stem) with several leaflets on it. It also has a bud at its base. Look at the pictures.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€ NEEDLE-LIKE)Very thin, with a sharp point at the tip.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€SCALY…Tiny scales overlap on the stems. You might have to use a hand lens to see them! Look at the pictures to see what they look like.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€BROAD1Flat leaves. They come in many shapes and sizes.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€LOBEDeLobed leaves have big dents in their edges. The lobes can be pointy or round. Look at the pictures.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€TOOTHED|"TOOTHED" means the leaf has small points on the edges. They are usually all the way around the leaf. Look at the picture.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€ENTIRE=The leaf is smooth all around the edge. Look at the picture.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€PALMATE½These veins look a little like your hand with the fingers spread out! The veins start all at one place at the bottom of the leaf, and go out to the edges of the leaf. Look at the picture.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€PINNATEˆThese leaves have long vein in the middle of the leaf. The other veins go out to both sides from the middle vein. Look at the picture.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€SMOOTHGThe bark is mostly smooth. It can have small bumps and wrinkles in it. redbud2s.jpg€PUZZLE PIECES, WHITE INNER BARK¥The bark has lots of pieces like a puzzle. They peel off the trunk of the tree. There is white bark inside! You can see the white branches at the top ot the tree.sycamore2s.jpg€ROUGH4Bark can grow in ridges and furrows, or bumpy shapes oak2s.jpg€STRIPSƒSome bark looks like strips peeling off the trunk of the tree. Look at the pictures to help you decide. kinds of leaves2s.jpg€LEAF COMPLEXITYÃSimple or Compound? A Simple leaf is one leaf coming out from a bud at its base. A Compound leaf has several leaflets instead of one leaf. It has a bud at its base, too. Look at the pictures.kinds of leaves2s.jpg€ LEAF SHAPEè Some leaves are smooth all the way around (ENTIRE).. Some have "teeth" (points) around the edge (TOOTHED). Some have big dents in the edges called "lobes".(LOBED) Lobes can be pointy or round. Look at the pictures. kinds of leaves2s.jpg€ LEAF VEINSÿTurn the leaf over. You can see the veins better on the back. If the veins all start at one point and spread out like the fingers on your hand, they are PALMATE. If there is one big vein in the middle, and many veins going out to both sides, they are PINNATE. Look at the pictures.kinds of leaves2s.jpg €BARKÿ=Bark can be smooth or rough. Sometimes it peels off in strips or in puzzle shapes. Some trees have smooth bark when they are young and rough bark when they are old. Look at the bark on the tree and look at the photos. The pine cones are thin, too. The Pine tree is an evergreen. It keeps its green, needle-like leaves all winter long. Pine trees smell good, too! pine2s.jpg(€ÿÊThe Eastern Red Cedar is a medium-size, bushy tree with SCALE-LIKE leaves. Some of them are sharp! Some scales lie flat against the stem, and you may have to use a hand lens to see them. Do you see any little round, blue "berries"? (They are really cones.) Many birds like to eat them. The bark is reddish and looks like it is peeling off in strips. Eastern Red Cedars are native to Ohio. You will see them growing in old fields and in the woods. cedar2s.jpg(€ÊThe Honey Locust has COMPOUND leaves. It has many small leaflets on a single leaf stem (petiole). Some Honey Locust trees have really big thorns! The tree at Kramer School is the kind without thorns. locust2s.jpg(€ÿ2The Eastern Redbud tree is a small tree with heart-shaped leaves. In the spring, they have pretty purple-pink flowers on them before the leaves come out. In the summer, they grow fruits that look like bean or pea pods hanging off the tree. (The leaf tip usually has one point - this is a weird leaf!) redbud2s.jpg(€ÿºThis tall tree has LOBED leaves. They have big, round dents on the sides of the leaves. On the pointed tips of the leaves are little bristles. Look at them with your hand lens. Oak trees make acorns. Do you see any under the tree? Squirrels like to eat them, and they will bury them in the ground for food in winter. Oak leaves turn brown, but they stay on the tree all winter. They fall off in the spring when the new leaves come out. oak2s.jpg(€ÿgSweetgum leaves are shaped like stars, and they are PALMATE. The veins start at one place at the base of the leaf and go out to the five points of the leaf, like the fingers on your hand. Some Sweetgum trees have fruits that look like prickly balls hanging from stems. In the fall, Sweetgum leaves turn many pretty colors - red, yellow, orange, and purple.sweetgum2s.jpg(€ÿAThe Eastern Sycamore tree is a big tree with big leaves. The leaves have PALMATE veins. Look at the bark - it looks like puzzle pieces peeling off! If you look up at the top of the tree you will see beautiful white bark where the outer bark has peeled off.
