BOT 155 Section B FIELD EXAM 1 SPECIES LIST

This list is finalized as of Sept 15, 2010 for the Field Exam 1 scheduled for Sept 22, 2010.

You are expected to be able to recognize the following plant species when you encounter them in the field.

You are expected to be able to provide the Common, species, and Family name for each.

Numbers in (parentheses) are page numbers corresponding to species descriptions in Newcomb's Wildflower Guide.

Numbers in [brackets]
are page numbers corresponding to species descriptions in Grimm's Trees.

Image links under species will help you recall what these plants look like, but the best way to study for the exam is to actually revisit the species in the field, to compensate for the limitations of photographs and biological variation.  Practice sight recognition as you walk around our campus.  Quiz yourself and your companions as you walk past the wildflowers, vines, shrubs, and trees between classes.

I encourage you and your classmates to go out and practice keying unknown wildflowers/vines with Newcomb and trees with Grimm in preparation for the keying component of the examination  -- "Practice makes Perfect"

Have fun while you engage in these activities, learn to observe, enjoy, and appreciate your surroundings as you learn.  We do after all, have one of the most beautiful and botanically diverse campuses in the USA!
