The Formation of the Solar System
and Extrasolar Planets

As we finish our discussion of the Solar System, there are a few questions that should be addressed

Until recently, astronomers could only speculate about the answers to these questions; however, in the last decade or so, both observations and theory have begun to provide some answers . . . and inevitably more questions.

Formation of the Solar System

Detection of ExtraSolar Planets

One question that should spring to mind when discussing the formation of our solar system is:

In the last decade, observations seem to indicate that planets around other stars are common.

You might think that to find a planet orbiting another star, all you have to do is look through a big telescope, but it's not so simple. These are perhaps the most difficult observations done in astronomy today.
