How
can I manage students so that they stay focused during an activity?
A good rule of thumb
is students have the capacity to remain focused about one minute for every
year of age. So if you are planning a 45-minute activity with 10 year
olds, plan to break the lesson into four parts. Whenever possible, have
students move with each transition. An example is listed below.
- 10 minutes of
introduction with students seated on the floor in the front of the room
- 15 minutes of
initial activity with students working in small groups at tables or
desks
- 5 minutes of discussion
and/or sharing with students seated on the floor in the front of the
room
- 10 minutes of
final worktime or assessment with students working in small groups or
individually
- 5 minutes of clean-up
and organizing
