Adding Food Scraps--ALWAYS Cover The Food
Cover the food to reduce the risk of fruit flies or other unwanted visitors (cats, dogs, etc.) coming to your pile. Even if you have a compost bin with a lid, it is still necessary to cover your food each time with yardwaste.

Note: Do not add animal products such as meat or large amounts of cheese. They take longer to decompose and some (meats/manure) can contain harmful bacteria that can cycle into produce if the compost soil is used for gardening.
