Maintenance (biweekly or monthly)
Turn the pile using a shovel, snowshovel, or pitchfork. Move the pile four feet over as you turn it. While turning, water any areas of the pile that are dry and crumbly. Do not put a large amount of water in any one spot. Remember, the pile should be moist (not wet) like a wrung-out sponge.

Note: If you are tracking temperature, turn the pile after the temperature begins to drop as this usually indicates a drop in the consumers that are producing the heat due to lack of air. After turning the temperature will drop initially due to the release of heat while turning, but will increase dramatically within a couple of days.
