We invite you to participate in the second workshop on China-US Collaborative Research on Gemicrobiological Processes in Extreme Environments, which will be held at The Pennsylvania State University, May 18-23, 2010.

The first workshop was held at China University of Geosciences, Beijing from October 12-17, 2008. These two workshops are co-funded by the US and Chinese National Science Foundations and aim to bring together expertise in various areas of geomicrobiology, with a special focus on processes in extreme environments. The workshops are designed to allow topics of mutual interests to be identified and new ideas to be exchanged among the US and Chinese scientists. We will continue the following topics in the second workshop:

    1. Hot environment: Microbial carbon and energy metabolism in terrestrial hot springs and mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal vents.
    2. Cold environment: Microbial processes to mitigate acid mine drainage from coal mining in the United States and China.
    3. Salty environment: Microbial ecology in the saline Tibetan lakes and saline lakes in the United States.
    4. Deep environment: Microbial ecology of the deep continental and marine biosphere.

The workshops will provide a platform for those who are interested in the above environments and beyond to form specific international partnerships between the US and China. Your participation in one of the topics is greatly appreciated.
